Sheffield Rotary, the CITY Rotary Club

Why Join Rotary

Rotary members are part of the world’s largest volunteer humanitarian organisation. They aim to:
    • Learn about business and commerce relevant to their areas
    • Combine their professional skills to enable communities to benefit
    • Use their business experience to develop humanitarian projects locally, regionally and internationally

  • There is a cost to being a member (see ‘Are there many rules in Rotary?’), but the enjoyment, satisfaction, fellowship and sense of achievement obtained from joining a group of like-minded volunteers greatly outweighs the relatively modest amount.

  • Ask about our Company Corporate Membership Scheme – Keep in touch for £250 annually and support our work, with entitlement to membership for a company representative.

  • 1.2 million members of Rotary International in 34,000 Clubs in 200 countries and regions of the world can make a huge difference. You should be part of it!

  • Once you become a member of Rotary International, you will be welcomed in any of these Clubs in all of these places as a friend.

  • Members come from all backgrounds across the city with the aims of educating themselves about key issues affecting their city, region, nation and the world in general, and bringing their skills and experience to bear on challenges that improve life for less fortunate people in different communities.

  • Membership is open to men and women who can represent their profession, business or calling and bring the experience of their background to strengthen our own knowledge base.

  • We aim to reflect business and community in Sheffield and want those who feel they can offer their skills, experience and enthusiasm, to come and take part. There’s no obligation to join … just come and try it out.

  • Meetings are part education - usually with a guest speaker – part Club business, part fun, involve a meal and last from 6:30 to 8:30pm on Monday evenings. We have a range of ages, male and female and a range of backgrounds.

  • International projects include the world eradication of polio, for which the Polio Plus project began in 1985 and has now reduced the virus from a world epidemic to just four countries. The Gates Foundation is currently partnering with Rotary International and has given a US$355 million grant, added to which Rotarians have pledged to raise $200 million.

  • Local projects include the Rotary Centre, Castleton, which is a fully equipped holiday centre in the Peak District National Park on 29 acres of land. It offers low-cost holiday accommodation for mainly volunteer groups. Our Club provides three one-week residential holidays in July & August each year, for needy children from Sheffield, a project that has continued since 1920. See http://www.rotarycentrecastleton.co.uk for details.
