Sheffield Rotary, the CITY Rotary Club



TALK BY THE DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE
A a recent Rotary Club of Sheffield meeting the guest Speaker was the His Grace the Duke of Devonshire. Over 100 Rotarians and visitors from as far as Hull and Lincoln, including the District Governor of Rotary District 1270 heard the dukes give a fascinating talk on the changes that are going ahead at Chatsworth House.



The Duke paid tribute to his father's influence over the revival of the estate, saying 'My father rescued Chatsworth'. And of his mother Deborah's amazing skills that have devoloped the retailing side he said in promoting her new book 'Counting my Chickens' - She is an inveterate shop keeper'. During the evening over £300 was raised towards buying a Shelter Box. The Rotary Shelter Boxes are sent at short notice to disaster areas in the world, the most recent being the Earthquake in Sumbawa Island in Indonesia.



A vote of thanks was given by member Peter Sephton.



 


MUSIC IN THE GARDENS PRESENTATION
Cheques totaling £55,000 were given to charities on Monday 3rd October 2011. The monies where raised at the summer Music in the Gardens Event held in the Sheffield Botanical Gardens.

To celebrate its 90th year of providing holidays for South Yorkshire children, the club is holding a reunion on Saturday 17th July 2010 from 10.00am and members are asking those who have enjoyed the centre in the past to join them. read more

13TH GOLF TOURNAMENT FOR ST. LUKES HOSPICE
We extend you a very warm welcome, to this the 13th such tournament held especially for St. Luke's. Once again there's been a great response- both from traditional long-term supporters and several new ones keen to support St. Luke's great work. We are most greatful to them and you, the players. We had 36 teams enter the event, together with the tombola raised £4500 on the day for St.Lukes Hospice. read more

The Rotary Club's in Sheffield joined up for a visit to the Kelham Island Museum and the Hawley Collection of Tools. read more

ROTARY GO TEN PIN BOWLING
The Rotary Club of Sheffield and The Rotary Club of Sheffield Vulcan, had a challenge Ten Pin Bowling Competition, held at the Sheffield's Ski Village on the second week of March 2010. read more

FIGHTING CANCER IN OUR COMMUNITY
Fighting cancer in our community Catherine Newman, senior fundraiser at Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, was a visitor to our club in November, who came to collect a cheque for £2000. This was part of the money raised by the club at our summer Music in the Gardens event. An excellent ambassador or the hospital, she explained to the club all the investment being made in Cancer treatment at the hospital, and all the different age groups who actually attend for treatment. We were surprised to learn that thousands of people attend the hospital every week from all over the region. read more

ROTARY'S OLDEST PROJECT GETS A TOUCH OF THE OLDEST PROFESSION
Now I have your attention, the oldest profession I am writing about is actually Dry Stone Walling, not the other more commonly known oldest profession. Recently, the Derbyshire and South Yorkshire branches of the Dry Stone Walling Association (DSWA) combined their efforts to build an 11 metre dry stone wall to mark the car park entrance to the Rotary Centre, Castleton. read more

ENVIRONMENT AWARD FOR SHEFFIELD CLUB ROTARIAN
David Pollard, Environment officer at the Rotary Club of Sheffield, and District1270, has been awarded at Rotary District 1270’s September meeting, the District Environment Award for 2009. David has been active since becoming District Environment Officer giving talks to district clubs, and delivering sales of the award winning Standby Saver. These can benefit the environment so that on one side, will cut up to 100% of standby power in the home, and on the other, benefit the Rotary CO2 Trust with a £2.50 payment. MUSIC IN THE GARDENS SATURDAY 4th JULY 2009
Charity for Shepherd Wheel Restoration. The evening started with a down pour rain, but this did not put the visitors off. First on stage "Highly Strung" talented young players from High Storrs, King Edward VII, Silverdale and Tapton Secondary Schools, directed by Martin Cropper and Liz Hanks. (No Photos because of the young musicians) This ensemble has performed at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield Music Club and the Broomhill Festival. read more
