Sheffield Rotary, the CITY Rotary Club
Sheffield Club Projects
To support charitable organisations and to run the various projects and programmes, Rotary Clubs need to raise funds. They invariably call on the skills and experience of their members to devise ways to generate funds from their communities in a range of ways. Some of these have a double benefit – they add benefit to the community and raise some funds at the same time.
Examples of these are:

The annual concert series that originated from Sheffield Rotary and is held in the city’s Botanical Gardens and at the end of June 2011 raised £57,000 to distribute to a wide range of charities.

Heritage Plaques
Sheffield Rotary Club began making Heritage Plaques available in 1993, and a growing list of commemorations has now been made across the city. Plaques are individually made in Sheffield from high-grade gun-metal bronze, which means there is time and cost involved to create the initial mold, cast the plaque and erect it on-site. Once in place, they will however last for ever!
Examples of these are:
- Pride in our City - Commemorative Plaques
- Walk Sheffield's Heritage published by The Rotary Club of Sheffield
- Inside Sheffield's Winter Garden & the Story behind the Peace Gardens - published by The Rotary Club of Sheffield
- Mock interviews in local schools for Year 11 pupils

- Through a charitable trust, the Club owns and runs the Centre, which is situated half a mile outside the village of Castleton in the Peak District National Park, in a quiet rural setting.
- It provides an economical venue for groups of up to 50 guests.
- The Rotary Centre provides an ideal base for a range of activities in the surrounding area.
- During their stay, groups have exclusive use of the buildings and there is a large grassed area for playing games and other activities.
- The Centre turns over around £60,000 annually and is one only a handful of similar Rotary facilities in the world.
The Sustainability Trust – Click here for detailswww.thesustainabilitytrust.org
- Sheffield Club was a founding member of the Trust, which was formed to raise awareness of the need to adopt sustainable principles in our lives and our communities in order to preserve the planet’s finite resources.
- Currently we need the resources of 1.4 planet Earths to sustain our lifestyle. As developing nations grow, this is estimated to rise to the resources of two planet Earths by 2040. This is totally unsustainable.
- The Trust also deals with the challenges arising from Climate Change and the consequences of global warming.
- 12 Rotary Clubs from five continents have financed the web-based project, which began in 2007. The aim is to encourage all 34,000 Clubs to embrace the need for a sustainable planet and maintain a climate temperature that supports our civilisation.
- Over 800 Rotary Clubs are now linked to the project and the Trust promotes the principles at District and national conferences and at the annual International Rotary Convention – in New Orleans in 2011 and Bangkok in 2012.
