Pride in our City
A Reflection of Achievements Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Today's great city of Sheffield is a reflection of the achievements of many generations before us, and each year, the pace of change appears to increase. How can we record the passing of one activity, event, person or organisation amid this every changing landscape?

The answer for many years now has been the erection of a plaque in the location that is being commemorated. The plaques, carefully researched before being artworked and then founded in solid brass at Sheffield foundry, are the work of the Rotary Club of Sheffield, which was early to recognise the important of generating pride in our city.

There are now as many as 30 sites in Sheffield that have been commemorated in this way, and there may be twice as many more that should be achieved over the next ten years.

Sites that have already been commemorated vary from the popularity of the meeting place that was once known as "Coles Corner", to the great and world renowned history that falls to the Cutlers Company who still occupy the most recent of their Cutlers Halls.

As the city changes again, once great cutlery companies whose wares helped build the new world are becoming new places to live. It is these buildings which will require a commemoration before the real heritage of the building is forgotten.

Similarly, as the river banks are recovered from their industrial past and visitors will again be able to gain access, the sites that represent once renowned landmarks will need to be recorded for the future.

THE FUTURE

The Rotary Club of Sheffield offer a partnership to those interested in recording the highlights of the past in a tasteful and permanent way.

New Plaques are erected with a ceremony involving those closest to the project in the past and present. These always generate media interst which helps begin the long term recognition proposed. Whoever is responsible for funding the production of the plaque is recorded on it and is the organisation responsible for unveiling it at the event organised by the Rotary Club of Sheffield.
